Every week we get truckloads of snacks at wholesale and bulk prices, but don't forget, at our prices the stock doesn't last long. With the best tasting crisps in the world it's not a surprise that the UK eats nearly 3 bags of crisps each per week and is one of the worlds largest consumers of crisps.

We can deliver our sweets and chocolate at amazing prices because we buy tons of them every week. Our bulk prices often bring your favourite brands like Haribo and Rowntrees at less than half the price of supermarkets.

Excessive water and chemical use, run-off of fertilisers into waterways, the dead zone at the mouth of the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico: all are examples of high environmental costs from US corn production. Producers and traders pay virtually none of the costs of those damages, and the price of corn when it goes across the border into Mexico does not reflect these environmental costs.

What happens on the Mexican side? Well, the smaller producers are maintaining great biodiversity - both wild and in corn varieties - with low-input systems. These positive contributions go unrewarded by the market. Corn biodiversity has virtually no value in the global marketplace, yet these corn seeds are the building block for future varieties of corn: ones we will need to withstand climate change, deal with pesticide resistance, and so on.

The price of Mexican corn does not reflect these contributions to the common good. When you globalise trade, you also globalise market failure. You get under-priced US corn coming into direct competition with under-valued Mexican corn.

Mexican corn loses that competition, but not because it's less 'efficient'. A Mexican farmer once said, "We've been producing corn in Mexico for 8, years. If we don't have a comparative advantage in corn, where do we have a comparative advantage? The problem is that comparative advantage as defined by the global marketplace doesn't value the advantage that Mexican corn offers.

And in the deregulated marketplace, the only value is how cheap something is. The globalisation of market failure gives us a worsening environment, increasing poverty among food producers, increasing food dependence, and hunger.

That is why one of the main culprits of the food crisis is our blind pursuit of cheap food. Globalisation cheapens everything. The problem is that some things just shouldn't be cheapened. The market is very good at establishing the value of many things but it is not a good substitute for human values.

Societies need to determine their own human values, not let the market do it for them. There are some essential things, such as our land and the life-sustaining foods it can produce, that should not be cheapened. Meanwhile, the amount of arable land per person will continue its long-run downward trend. The extent of this challenge has been highlighted by the extreme drought in the US this year.

Failure of the maize harvest — down by more than m tonnes on what was expected — has had a knock-on impact on wheat, which has not been affected by the lack of rain. It will take time for these increases to have their full impact on consumers.

In the short run, the cost of meat will not be affected because there is glut caused by livestock owners slaughtering their herds in order to save money on expensive feed. But by the end of the year, food will be dearer.

Central banks are unlikely to tighten policy in response to higher inflation, since the increase is seen as an external shock that will have a depressing effect on the spending power of consumers. They should not, however, assume that the spike will be a one-off, since grain stocks are at such low levels that bad harvests in would see rocketing prices, probably accompanied by panic-buying, export bans and food riots.

A recent report from Oxfam said the US should expect further severe droughts in the coming decades. This seems to be an apt moment for the west to reassess the wisdom of biofuels. The US ethanol distilleries used m tonnes of maize in and there have already been calls from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation for the reduced maize crop to be used for human food.

There is also growing political opposition in the US to the country's Renewable Fuel Standard, which mandates Unsurprisingly, livestock and poultry producers have been at the forefront of calls for the mandate to be suspended.

The whole point about biofuels was that they were supposed to be a cost-free and a pain-free way for developed nations to show that they were responding to climate change.

Rising crop yields meant there would be enough grain left over each year to turn into ethanol, and this would mean western consumers could do their bit to save the planet without in any way compromising their living patterns. That now looks like a highly questionable assumption.

So what happens next? A lasting solution to the food question will require either action on the demand side, action on the supply, or more likely both.

The two obvious ways of limiting demand are to check population growth or to change dietary habits so that meat consumption is reduced. Neither is going to be easy to achieve. On the supply side, the short-term response should be to find alternatives to biofuels. Longer term, the hope is that the pressures of a rising population coupled with the incentives provided by rising food prices lead to a second green revolution that will dramatically increase yields in those parts of the world — such as sub-Saharan Africa — where they are currently low.

One of the few beneficial impacts of high commodity prices is that farmers will be able to afford to buy fertilisers for their land.

A recent study by Fidelity looked at some of the other recent developments to boost food supply, including precision agriculture — the use of high technology to apply the optimum amounts of seed, water and fertiliser for maximum efficiency — and a wider use of biotechnology and GM crops.

The report also highlighted what is known as "fast food" from animal cells, a process by which scientists "create artificial meat by delivering an electric charge to the animal muscle cells in a mixture of amino acids, which causes the cells to multiply".

Given the predicted growth in consumption in developing countries, Fidelity says this could become an "environmentally acceptable option" as traditional meat becomes more expensive. Whether this approach is "environmentally acceptable" remains to be seen.

The Fidelity report does, however, clarify one point, namely that hard choices have to be made. One of the first steps in prepping your family for an emergency is setting up a day food supply.

This may seem like an expensive task, but it can be affordable — and easy — if you do it the right way. One way to get your day supply of food going is to store 30 days worth of the things you already eat.

Some people will get around this via the prepackaged route with a prepackaged day supply of food, but this is a mistake. Your first 30 days should be made up of the food from your everyday pantry.

This takes no special ordering or online researching — just your normal shopping trips to the local store. Fresh food, of course, is so much better for you, but we are talking about storing food.

That is, for each grocery trip, buy your regular groceries and buy a couple of the same things for your emergency food supply. An extra can of tuna, an extra can or two of veggies, and some extra oatmeal only adds a couple dollars to your bill.

Just 30 Grams Of This Superfood Provides More Nutrition Than An Entire Meal! If you are consistent about it, soon you will have quite a stash of extra food.

Then, look at all your extra stuff, figure out where you are short, and concentrate on adding to that area. How many of us lived on Ramen noodles when we were first out on our own?

Ramen is cheap and stores well, but it has hardly any food value. But it can be used as a base for a large pot of soup with a couple cans of veggies thrown in.

Comfort food does have value in that it will help make things a little more normal in an otherwise stressful situation. Experts tell us we need to store one gallon of water per person per day.

In the long-run, though, water usage would have gone up as more cleaning would have been necessary.
