But one thing I do know is, if a big popular streamer plays your demo, your wishlists and sales go up. When I wrote about ZERO: Sievert , I looked at the cohort data and found that the highest converting cohort were the people who wishlisted the game during the month that popular streamer Splattercat played it.

So anything you can do to get streamers to play your game is better and demos are the key to unlock streamers. Big, online, festivals like Steam Next Fest give you front page visibility on Steam.

However if you want to get in, you usually need a demo. Most of the time, people wishlist a game and never play the demo. Mob Factory is a tower defense meets automation game that is in active development by Lukas VanTilburg.

He shared this wishlist chart. Lukas spent several months marketing his game without a demo and then recently uploaded a demo. Looking just at the cyan-colored line, I bet you can guess when the demo was made live!

A similar things happened to Dome Keeper. I wrote about how Dome Keeper earned 40, wishlists in a month with a streamer and a very good demo. The developer uploaded a demo and then a series of Streamers found it over time. If the developer pulled the demo at any point that month he would have lost out on thousands of wishlists.

The Resident Evil VII demo works much the same way. Play it once, and you might not uncover every secret. The more you play, the more there is to discover. These demos work because they get players talking with each other and asking questions.

If you played it once, there was nothing else to do. A game like Uncharted is never going to demo well because it plays the same way each time. Enter the map from Point A, travel to point B shooting the exact same guys in the exact same places every time.

But a demo that offers engaging reasons to return makes the audience hungry for the main game. This demo was essentially a miniature version of the game itself. An ideal demo walks a fine line between limitation and replayability. Pokemon only gives you two monsters to use, and one of them is temporary.

While the demo is substantial, knowing you can collect hundreds more monsters in the full game provides a good reason to return. One of the reasons I loved Xbox Live Arcade games so much was that every single demo was a locked version of the full game.

What to do then? Pokemon demos have provided players with unlocks in the full game. Dead Rising 2: Case Zero gave players a character export system that let them transfer a level 5 character into the full game. It also let them transfer weapons and unlock special cosmetics.

Forza demos have generally unlocked an expensive supercar in the full game. NBA 2K17 does something similar with its Prelude demo.

And it all started with a playable teaser that anyone could check out and enjoy. I've always been fascinated with the idea of letting players play early, and baffled by more structured approaches from larger companies that focus on extensive polishing before releasing traditional demos.

Yes, it makes sense to overpolish whatever you're putting out -- but when you innovate on a fundamental level of game mechanics and concepts, I believe it's very important to release these playables earlier, rather than later.

So here we are in , and our main marketing and production drivers are still playables. Playable teasers as we now like to call them. The problem we found with this setup is two fold: discoverability and feedback. Discoverability is a challenge on any open platform, as we all know. So when you launch a free app anywhere and promote it as if it was a full launch, you naturally get more eyeballs. It's perception, and the placement on the storefront.

Give an honest look into what players could expect. For playable teasers like this, aim for at least an hour of content.

Then comes the perception part. It's just so much easier to share a single link to something that is free. And if fans like it, they will go the extra step to go through our "funnel" of finding the main game page. And we've done this not just for teasers, but for full betas as well.

Last summer, a few hundred thousand players joined the Secret Neighbor beta on Steam and helped us form a large community on Discord. Feedback is the second reason we do this. We all know that Steam Reviews can be both a blessing and a curse. For playable teasers though, they create a platform of structured feedback alongside verifiable data -- playtime -- to get an understanding of the game, and if we're going in the right direction.

This is crucial. First, you need to create a free app on Steam. It's like a new game, but free. You need to differentiate the teaser from the main app, to make it clear that it is something else.
