Rock Climbing Gear Samples

However, we highly recommend practising in a controlled environment first, particularly with help from a climbing instructor. This gate then shuts to prevent the equipment from slipping out of the carabiner. Carabiners, ropes, and your harness are usually the crucial pieces of rock climbing equipment that stand between safety and serious injury, if not worse.

For this reason, you should invest in carabiners with long-standing reputations for quality and strength, such as those made by Petzl , Black Diamond , or the Tommy Caldwell endorsed Eldelrid.

There are other types, but they largely fall between those three, with minor variations. This video will help you identify which type of carabiner is best-suited for you:. We did say carabiners are used for all sorts of things in rock climbing—one of these is the quickdraw.

The idea is to attach one end of the quickdraw carabiner to a bolt hanger on a route and your rope to the other. This gives you some slack on the rope by allowing the rope to move around while remaining attached to the bolt hanger.

Once again, YouTube is your friend for this one—the below clip will help you pick the right quickdraw for your climb. Incidentally, this philosophy of conservation and ethical climbing is held by climbing pioneer and Yosemite big wall legend Yvon Chouinard who founded the outdoors clothing company Patagonia, amongst other achievements.

Unfortunately, rock faces and mountains occasionally have a habit of spontaneously fracturing, sending stones, rocks, and sometimes boulders tumbling down below. This is a hazard for any climber, which is why the helmet is another key piece of rock climbing equipment.

The untouched aspect of wild mountains makes the rock unpredictable, while the well-worn routes of trad and sport climbing can sometimes mean the wall has weakened. Ideally, your helmet should fit snugly and sit flat on your head but not feel too tight. You should also ensure the helmet does not obstruct your line of sight up the wall.

Stepping foot on a wall without climbing shoes is unheard of. They are as closely related to climbing as the racket is to tennis. In short, there is no rock climbing without them.

For this reason, climbing shoes are most often categorised by skill level, closely related to the degree to which the climbing shoe is downturned. Advanced climbing shoes are purposefully designed for vertical climbing, so the climber can transfer power through their foot to make better use of small holds.

Achieving this ability takes immense foot strengthening through years of climbing, hence why advanced shoes would be unwearable for a beginner. It would help if you ensured the shoe was suitable for your foot shape. Many bouldering gyms have integrated climbing equipment shops, and test holds so that you can try on the shoe and try it out.

In most instances, beginner and intermediate shoes are suitable in both environments. Chalk bags are a pretty straightforward bit of kit. They also come with a side-release buckle and a loop of fabric so that you can attach them to your harness or pants.

There are endless options on the market, all roughly as good as each other, given the simple design. Plus, chalk bags are one of the few pieces of rock climbing equipment that allow you to flex a bit of your personality.

A cylindrical bag is ideal for longer climbs, whereas a tapered bag is best suited to shorter routes. As with the chalk powerlifters and gymnasts use, chalk is used in climbing to increase grip and friction on the surface of your hand by drying sweat and other moisture.

Some apply it pre-emptively, while others only apply it after flappers occur. Many climbing tapes contain zinc-oxide to help heal the abrasions and decrease the chances of infection, too.

He told me he was planning on soloing the Eiger, and wanted to know if I had any ideas about getting some sponsorship for the climb. If they didn't, then there was no way they should be attempting it, as it was obviously some ploy to prise some gear out of a climbing company, and no doubt he'd die.

Basically there are easier ways of getting a pair of boots. I get a lot of young climbers asking me about how to go about getting free stuff or cash from manufactures for their trips, so this little article gives you some ideas.

Keep pushing. UKC Articles © Andy Kirkpatrick Rule number one; don't expect something for nothing. Climbing companies - much to many climbers' annoyance - are businesses that aim to make a profit. The more gear they give, the less money they make. This gear is given out from marketing budgets and so the majority of marketing departments will save their budgets for adverts, websites and competitions.

If you're Bear Grylls or some weather girl on the TV climbing something then they will, but then that's not for nothing. Advertising rates for TV mean getting just a glimpse of a logo is enough to set PR people into fits of orgasmic delight.

Rule number two; don't expect to impress anyone with your holidays. Nine times out of ten marketing departments will be staffed by non climbers. These people will be impossible to impress, E10, Scottish Grade XII, metres, means nothing to them.

Basically walking to the North Pole or climbing Everest just isn't that impressive. If it is impressive, then it probably won't make any sense to them anyway, and nothing will convince them you're anything other than just another scrounging climber trying to nibble at their bottom line.

HOW TO GET SEXY GEAR ALMOST FREE There are very few free lunches, and in my experience most free gear is gear you don't really want. In fact the higher the desirability the lower the chance of a freebie, meaning MSR XGK stoves, PHD sleeping bags and Hilliberg tents are thin on the ground.

If you want it, then you'll have to pay for it. The best way to get gear is to develop a long term relationship with a manufacturer. This unfortunately will involve buying gear to begin with, but if you supply them with stuff that's equally as valuable then you will be able to negotiate gear in return.

For example all companies require good quality images and critical user feedback and stories, so if you have a nice photo of a DMM helmet that stands out and is high enough resolution to print and you post it off to DMM, you may find you can swap it for some gear. If the same helmet has saved your life, and you post it's shattered remains, along with a well written account and pictures you should get a helmet for your troubles.

If you can continue to provide good quality feedback, and photos, and so help the brand, then you are providing a service to the company, and most will be willing to repay you in gear. If you're really good you may even find yourself becoming a tester, getting to use prototypes, and some may even get paid for the privilege!

When I first started working in outdoor shops I was a total gear nerd, and made it my business to ask a lot of questions to people in companies like Buffalo, Rab, Berghaus and Patagonia, sending them pictures and feedback on their gear after big trips.

Very soon they trusted me enough to send me samples to try out, and as my pictures improved, actually pay for their use. The result was in the mid 90's I ended up being paid as one of Patagonia's five international gear testers, being sent lots of odd clothing, often two separate jackets sewn together.

The trick is to be able to put into words your experience using a product, which generally requires a critical eye for design and detail, with a good level of experience of gear so you know what to expect. Designers aren't interested in what's right with gear, they want to know what's wrong, and what they forgot to include.

GET A JOB IN A CLIMBING SHOP Many good climbers have done a stint working in climbing shops, and there are generally always jobs coming up, especially if you're flexible and can work part time.

The pay is generally bottom line, but this is made up by the fact that you can get good discounts on gear, often trade plus VAT.

There are two primary considerations here:. When purchasing your rock climbing gear, this is also the approach we recommend—you want to own equipment you use regularly.

You can always hire anything more specific if you need it. Ideally, your harness should comfortably work with your clothing to ensure a full range of movement. Padding, extra-wide webbing, ventilation, and moisture transport are some key features to look for.

The waist belt fastens yep, you guessed it around your waist. Given that a harness is designed to keep you safe, you need to examine the harness for defects or damage even when buying one new. The below video can help you identify them:. Not that long ago, more than dangerous harnesses were seized from an eBay seller—showing how important it is to do your research before buying one.

Others prefer Velcro because it's quicker to put on and take off between climbs.

I like the Origin from Scarpa because they're a well-built, relatively non-aggressive flatter-soled shoe good for beginners. But the Origin will always have a place in your rotation when your climbs demand a lot of sole-to-rock contact, like granite slabs.

When top-rope climbing, the person on the wall is secured via the rope to the anchors on the wall by a partner—a belayer—who stands below with hands on the rope, ready to catch the climber when they fall. They use a belay device to do so. The ATC Guide is the benchmark to beat.

Tough, versatile, and usable in the gym or outdoors, mine has never let me down. The GriGri is another belay device. You don't need an ATC Guide and a GriGri.

It's an either-or situation. The GriGri is an assisted-braking device, which means that when the climber falls, the device catches them rather than the belayer—though the belayer still needs to stand ready with hands on the rope for safety. The big risk isn't equipment failure, it's operator failure.

Every so often a belayer freezes up when their climbing partner falls, and they forget to let go of the brake release lever.

Then the falling climber decks hits the ground. So if you're going to use an assisted-braking belay device like the GriGri, drill it into your head to get your hand off the lever when your climber falls.

That said, many belay partners have caught my falls with the GriGri, and I trust myself to them. Aarian Marshall. Jaina Grey. Brenda Stolyar. Scott Gilbertson. I've fallen in love with these because, unlike traditional carabiners, they're almost impossible to snag on a rope or harness gear loop.

The nose—the part of the carabiner that the open end of the gate clips to—is a snag-free design that really works. It sounds like a small deal, but repeated hundreds of times over a day, a snagging carabiner can be really annoying. And I can't deny that their snappy choice of DMM's color palettes helps you look good on the wall.

Pear-shaped HMS carabiners manage large amounts of rope better than non-HMS carabiners, so if you only carry one locker, carry an HMS and use it for belaying and rappelling.

If you progress later to building anchors or using a Munter hitch, more room for the rope. You only need one of these right now. You won't need wire-gate carabiners if you're only climbing indoors.

Outdoors, you'll want a handful in addition to a couple of locking carabiners. Carabiner manufacturers are always working on ways to reduce weight and rope-snag. The gram Dyon has an inventive gate that starts as a conventional wire gate on the hinge end and then morphs into a single, thick pin that loops over the open end's nose.

Gate action is smooth, and it's almost impossible to snag the nose on ropes and gear loops. Wire gates have mostly replaced standard solid gates, as they're lighter and less susceptible to gate chatter or gate flutter—that noise you hear in a fall when the weight of the gate briefly makes itself pop slightly open.

It's rarely a big deal, but climbers are always thinking about risk management. A good climbing tee is deceptively hard to find. Even a little bagginess can get annoying as spare material flops around while you maneuver on the wall, but whatever you wear can't be constricting or else you won't have full mobility.

The Capilene Cool Lightweight T-Shirt is my favorite for indoor gyms and warm outdoor climbing days, because its percent polyester fabric is trim-fitting, yet has enough stretch to allow all kinds of contorting while reaching for handholds and footholds.

Because it's synthetic, it also dries much, much faster than cotton. That's a blessing outside, especially, when wind on even a mild day can chill you to the bone if your shirt is damp with sweat. If you don't know the name Kühl, you should acquaint yourself.

They make some of the finest-fitting outdoor clothes on the market, and for years I've been using a pair of Renegade pants to climb indoors and outdoors.

I've found most hiking pants—few pairs are marketed as climbing-specific—to be annoyingly baggy, even more so than shirts. While polyester shirts are fine for climbing, I'd suggest durable nylon pants instead of polyester pants, especially if you plan on climbing outside against more abrasive rock.

Available in tapered and standard fits and in a variety of inseams, the Renegade pants fit athletically, but 5 percent Spandex blended into its nylon fabric allows you to contort into all sorts of climbing positions.

Powdered chalk keeps your hands dry and grippy while climbing. It's not absolutely necessary, but it's nice to have. Loose chalk is fine, but for less of a mess, put it in a chalk sock. Whenever you need a little extra grip on the climbing wall, give the chalk sock a feel and your hands will be nicely coated without sending a dust plume into the air.

There's a non-refillable version, but I like this one that can be refilled with more chalk whenever you deplete it. After all, the more you can reuse, the less that'll end up in a landfill. Whether you're carrying loose chalk dust or a chalk sock, you'll need somewhere to store it while you're climbing.

You'll see lots of people, including serious climbers, dangling chalk bags off a harness gear loop with a carabiner, but the best method is to use the included waist strap. BECOME A GEAR REVIEWER The gear reviewer is a strange beast, a job that can be more of a curse than most people imagine, believing the reviewer simply wades around in free kit, goes climbing, then writes it up.

In reality it's a lot of work, and you'll do far more sitting behind a computer than climbing, your house gradually filling up with gear you either don't really want, or can't really find anything interesting to write about. Also you find that the keener the PR companies are to foster their gear on you, the worse the gear is, the more you want the gear, the harder it is to convince the manufacturer to part with it and they'll ask for it back!

Climbing magazines have very little wallop, and it's magazines like Trail who hold sway over manufacturers, making the cult of the gear reviewer an art form. More thoughts; don't expect big companies to be a push over. They aren't. Small companies that are run by climbers are more likely to understand your project and help you out.

Free gear is rare, but if you can show your trip has enough merit, they may offer you a discount rate. If you get a discount rate from someone then don't abuse it, as this will reduce the chances of future climbers to get the same deal. When asking for gear, you could ask if they have any old stock, remainders or seconds they don't want, rather then gear they can sell.

If you want the sexiest gear, on time, that fits, and is the right colour, then you're probably best just saving up and buying it yourself.
